SD Spady Elementary School

2019 - 2020

The West Boca High School AP Capstone Research program is currently engaged in a service project with SD Spady Elementary. This school was selected due to the economic limitations that the demographic suffers from in this region, which leads to higher illiteracy rates and poor academic performance due to less money being allocated for certain programs. Our service project is a way to give back to the community and rekindle their love for literature that is jeopardized by the financial disparity.

The inspiration behind our initiative came from the teacher that we are working very closely with. As a previous first grade teacher, her kids were ecstatic to be able to read about incredible characters and stories. However, strict school guidelines and funding prohibited reading time, thus limiting the ability for the students to utilize their vivid imagination. Young children thrive on being able to use their creativity to spur new innovative ideas and fuel their cognitive growth, and reading provides the perfect outlet for students to engage in an opportunity to build on vocabulary, syntax development and themes.

As part of our project, we will be constructing a brand-new literacy corner for the students. This will provide them an inviting space that will encourage reading outside of what school requirements are, which provides an escape from the burden of economic limitations at home.

Our other activities include the following:

  • Pen pal letter writing

  • Frequent visits to the school for in-class reading opportunities

  • Crafts that encourage collaboration and teamwork

  • Creation of a vocabulary tree and new peace corner

  • Construction of a stage for promoting expression and creative outlet

If you have any book donations or supplies, please deliver them to Mrs. Rubin's room 5-209. We are also looking for donations for materials to reconstruct the classroom. Click down below if you are interested in contributing.
